Rock Folds, Meiringspoort
Spectacular rock formations in Meiringspoort. Part of the Swartberg Range, Meiringspoort was formed about 250 million years ago. It consists of wonderfully folded Table Mountain Sandstone and is part of the Cape Fold Belt.
There are two ways to get from the Karoo into the Klein Karoo over / through the Swartberg and both are very scenic. The Swartberg Pass is for those with lots of time and Meiringspoort for those in a hurry. The Meiringspoort road features soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations along the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge and crosses the Groot River 25 times. It's always a toss-up which route to take between Sutherland & George. Although one can't exactly go wrong with the choices being: via Seweweekspoort, the Swartberg Pass or Meiringspoort! Yesterday I opted for Meiringspoort, with the obligatory waterfall visit :) I never tire of watery textures so the pools below the waterfall are endlessly fascinating to me - please excuse this somewhat repetitive interlude ;)
