Caroline of Ansbach (1683-1737), wife of King George II of Great Britain. A master politician, even her hostile father-in-law, George I, accorded her grudging respect & admiration. George II had affairs, but he deeply loved Caroline and treasured her as his right hand. On her death bed, she told him to re-marry. The king refused, telling her that he would, instead, "take mistresses". That was George's bumbling way of assuring Caroline that no woman would ever take her place. No one ever did.
