Puff Flower Motif and How to Join As You Go | Don't these little crochet puff flowers make the most amazing fabric? 😍🌸🧶 | By Hooked by Robin | Today I'm going to be showing you how to crochet these absolutely adorable little puff flowers and how to join them as you go to create this beautiful fabric. To begin we're going to start with a magic ring and then chain one which does not count as a stitch. Now into this magic ring we're going to work 12 single crochet stitches. So just straight into the ring, single crochet. That's one. We need 12 in total. Once you have 12 single crochet made you're going to find that very first one (remembering the chain one does not count) and we're going to join with a slip stitch so just pop your hook under that first single crochet yarn over draw the yarn through that stitch and through the loop on your hook now you can go ahead and tighten up that magic ring at the back And now we're ready to begin the petal rounds. Now the petal rounds are formed using puff stitches. So to start we're going to chain two and then we're going to begin our puff stitch in the same stitch where you just chained from so that joining stitch so to do these puff petals we're going to yarn over go into that same stitch and draw up a loop now you want to draw it up nice and tall as high as you can get it to go so that's one - yarn over we're going to do that again so pop your finger on those loops on your hook so they don't come off and we're going to yarn over go back into that same stitch drop a loop pull it up as high as you can. Now one more time, yarn over, go back into that same stitch and drop a loop. You'll have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven loops on your hook. Now we're going to do that again but into the very next stitch. So we're going to yarn over. Go into that next single crochet. Keep your finger on all those loops. And we're going to drop another loop. That's once keeping it as tall as possible. And again yarn over. Go back into that stitch and drop a loop. That's twice and then one more time, yarn over. Go back into that single crochet and draw up a loop. So we have formed the petal, all these loops over two stitches. You will have one, two, three, four, five, six, 7, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12, 13 loops on your hook. Now we're going to yarn over and pull through all bar this one last loop here so the loop closest to your hook we're not going to come through that one so you're only going to draw through the first 12 so yarn over rotate your hook so that is facing downwards that means you're less likely to catch all these loops and we're going to draw through very gently 12 of those 13 loops. Keeping that last one on your hook. So you've drawn through all bar one. Then to complete this first petal we're going to yarn over and draw through two loops. Now chain two and slip stitch into the next single crochet. That is your first petal complete. I've just sort of pushed it forward a little bit. We'll do that again. So chain two. One, two. Working back into that same stitch where you just change from. We're going to yarn over and drop a loop 3 times. So I've yarned over. Drop a loop. Once. Twice. Three times now we're going to move on to the next single crochet so find the next stitch along and we're going to repeat that so yarn over drop a loop three times nice and tall that's once twice three times. Once you have finished those two sets of yarn over and pull up three times you should have one, two, three, four, five, six, 7, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12, 13 loops on your hook. We're going to yarn over and draw through the first twelve. Remember rotate your hook down. And then yarn over and pull through those final two. Chain two. And slip stitch into the next single crochet. Push that little petal forwards. We're going to repeat that last step four more times. We want six petals in total. I'll go through it one more time. We're going to chain two. And into that same stitch where you chained from, yarn over, drop a loop nice and tall, three times. One, three. Then move to the next single crochet along and do the same thing. Yarn over and draw up a loop three times. One. Two. Three. Then yarn over and pull through 12 of those 13 loops. And then yarn over and draw through those final two. Chain two, and slip stitch into the next available stitch. So this next empty stitch. And push your little petal forwards. So we've created three petals and we need three more. So repeat that last step to form the petal three more times. I've just finished my sixth petal here and to end this little flower I'm going to chain two if you haven't already and then slip stitch to the very start so right in here it's a little join from when we slip stitched this magic circle closed just in there pop a slip stitch or if you can't easily identify that pop a slip stitch into the base the base of your first petal. But either way we're going to just slip stitch and then chain one. Cut your yarn leaving a nice length to weave in. Pull that up, out and tight. Pull your magic ring closed again if it's worked open like mine has. And then grab yourself a large eye needle and we're just going to weave in these two ends. So I'm going to weave the end from the petals back under these loops. So I'm not coming out on the front side, just weaving under at the back. And for the magic ring I'm going to just go underneath this round of single crochets. So just as before go under the stitches. It's quite tough. But you don't want to come out on the front side. Now you can leave this little flower as is and use it for whatever you fancy. You can make a whole load of loose ones and sew them together if you want. However I like to join them as I make them to create a nice cohesive fabric that I don't have to sew together. So I'm going to show you how to do that now. So when you want to join your puff flowers go ahead and create the first round and your very first petal. We're going to be joining from the second petal. So I'm going to my second petal by chaining two and then creating the puff stitch. Now at this stage before I chain two and slip stitch back down into these stitches I'm going to lift this loop up I'm going to pinch it with my finger and take my hook out now we're going to grab the flower that we want to join to and we're going to turn it over and if you look at the backside of these petals you'll see there is one larger stitch that you can clearly identify at the top of each of these puffs we're going to pop a hook under one of these. Let's find one that's nice and clear for you. Here we go. Here's one. I'm just going to pop my hook underneath that stitch. Then I'm going to put the loop from my new flower back on my hook. Pull it down tight and pull it through that premade flower. Now chain 2: 1, 2 and slip stitch to the next available single crochet to complete that petal. Now it seems a bit odd. We've got the back side looking at us whilst we're working on the front side. Don't worry about that. It works itself out. So we're going to be joining this at two points. So go ahead and make your next petal but do not finish the chain two at the end. So we want to take it to that Same stage that we just joined that other one. And we're going to do the same thing again. Pull up a loop and pinch that little flower as you don't want it getting loose. And then we're going to join to the petal below the petal that you just joined to. So not this top one we're going to go to this bottom one. So the next one down. Find that little loop that you can pop your hook under. There it is. It's just a light slightly looser stitch from the top of your puff petal. Put that loop back on your hook. Pull it tight and draw it through. It seems a little bit confusing but trust me once you've done a couple you won't even think about it. We just want to join to the petal down. Then we're going to chain two. And slip stitch back into the next available single crochet to complete that stitch. So by joining downwards it means that we're nice and flat on the back. And then you are facing in the right direction. So we've joined at two points. Now go ahead and finish this second flower. So that is how you join them together when working along a row, a straight row. Now for your second row, if you are tesselating them as I have here. For the second row you will be joining at three points. So that they slot together nicely. So just as before go ahead and create your first petal completely and stop on the second petal. So when joining a three points we want to join here here and here so orange where they're joined purple so with my flower I've reached the second petal I haven't chained to yet just like we did for these joins I'm going to lift up a loop pinch it and I'm going to join to orange then this middle point then purple so I'm going to flip this over orange, middle point, purple. So it's orange first. So this orange petal here. The one above the join. I'm going to go underneath it. It's quite tricky. I'm trying to hold two things at once here. Pop that loop back on your hook. Draw it through. So we've joined. Then finish this petal by chaining two. And then slip stitch into the next single crochet. Okay. So I've joined to orange. Orange. Now we're going to join to the join. So just as before I'm going to start the petal. You can let go of this joined bit. Going to start the petal. The next one. The third one. Drop that loop and pinch it. And now we're moving down a petal so remember just like we did on this one where you were joining the two together you move down a petal not up down we're going to go down and we're going to be joining at the point where these two are joined now we're just going to work into this space so I'm just going to pop my hook in the gap and pull it up so that join just underneath it Then pop the loop back on your hook. Pull it tight and draw it through. Then chain two. And I'm going to have to turn it back over, flip it around, and slip stitch back in to join. So you've joined to the middle. We joined to the orange to the middle. Now there is one point left to join which is this purple. So just as before start but don't complete the petal. Pinch it. Pull up a loop. Turn it around and you will naturally now be at the point of joining to purple. So we're going to find that stitch Draw it through. Chain two. Flip it around. Slip stitch into the next clear single crochet. Now you have joined at three points. Orange, middle, purple. It's how you'll be looking on the back. Then you can go ahead and finish up your flower. When you have to join at four points, so petal, join, join, petal, the theory is exactly the same as joining three points. So when you join a petal to a petal that is when we'll go underneath the loop of the joining petal and where you have to join at a spot where you've already joined so in there you treat it how we did this middle one. Just pop your hook in the gap. So join a petal to a petal and a join to a join. I hope you go on to try this puff flower. I hope you also try the join as you go. It may seem complicated but I promise once you get going and you understand the theory of it it's easy peasy. It creates such a fun fabric that you can use for all sorts, blankets, scarfs, purses, bags or whatever, cushions. The only limit is your imagination. So until next time. Happy crocheting. Bye!
