Of the slightly more than 104,000 women and children placed in these camps, about 28,000 died.  The humanitarian world was appalled.  The conduct of the British against the civilian Boer population was the subject of universal disapprobation, so it's interesting to note that his written defense of the British cause in the war was the reason Conan Doyle (creator of the Sherlock Holmes) was later knighted

Genl Koos de la Rey 22/10/1847 - 15/09/1914 was 'n genl gedurende 2de Vryheidsoorlog en word geag as een van die grootste militêre leiers tydens daardie konflik.De la Rey was beroemd vir sy rare gedrag teenoor sy vyande. 'n Voorbeeld: by Tweebosch op die 7/3 waar hy Lt-genl Methuen met van sy troepe gevange geneem het. Die troepe is teruggestuur en Methuen is vrygelaat omdat hy erg gewond is, De la Rey meen dat hy sou doodgaan sonder die mediese dienste wat Britte op daardie stadium kon…

Piet Joubert 1831-1900 Commandant General. Acted as President of the Transvaal when the territory was annexed in 1877, joined Kruger and Pretorius to take up arms against the British. He led the commando that defeated the British at Laing's Nek, Ingogo and Majuba Hill. Joubert became commandant-general of the Transvaal and managed to crush the Jameson Raid in January 1896. He died soon after besieging Ladysmith, which proved to be disastrous....

Piet Joubert, created the agitation which led to the First Boer War He, became commandant-general of the Boer forces.
