Baptism in Appalachia. The Granny Woman was a Christian, born and bred. Most churches in the mountains were Baptist, Pentacostal and Methodist. The lore that guided her practices came with her ancestors from Europe (usually the British Isles) and was supplemented by those of the Native American population, but she was in no way a pagan. She may have practiced herbalism, charm making, and reading signs, but she wasn't a witch.
