De Jonge Thomas, 'n Oos-Indiese skip, het op Sondag, 30 Mei 1773 in 'n hewige storm beland in Tafelbaai. Vir 'n dag en 'n nag het die storm in woede toegeneem, sodat die ankertoue later een vir een gebreek het.

Hulle was oorspronklik jagter-versamelaars, deel van die Khoisan-groep en verwant aan die Khoikhoi wat, in teenstelling met die San, nomadiese veeboere was. Die Boesmans word beskou as die oorspronklike inwoners van Suid-Afrika en woon reeds 40 000 jaar lank in die suidweste van die land. Europeërs het hulle Hottentotte genoem.

Nadat Sealy bietjie rondgekyk het, sien hy vir Japie daar naby staan en besluit om hom te ondervra. Hoeveel van hulle was daar?

Lizzie van Zyl. South Africa concentration camps claimed the lives of 27,972 Boers. Of these, 22,074 were children like Lizzie. Emily Hobhouse, an English activist, spent six months in SA from Jan to June 1901 visiting Bloemfontein and six other camps. She saw Lizzie van Zyl die on an airless April day. "I used to see her in her bare tent lying on a tiny mattress which had been given her, trying to get air from the raised flap, gasping her life out in the heated tent. Her mother tended her.

The  Memorial has a climb of 204 steps that takes one to the Observation Room, offering a magnificent view of the harbor and surroundings, more than 52m above the city. It contains the largest carillon of bells in the country in addition to its chiming clock.
