Located in the provinces of Gauteng and North West, the fossil sites cover an area of 47 000 hectares.

Andries Pretorius, Voortrekker leader, co-founder of the Natalia Republic and the original South African Republic (comonly known as the Transvaal), and first Chairman of the United Volksraad of the latter. Pretoria, the main capital of South Africa, is named for him.
