There is a trend toward open floor plans for living spaces, but one big open vast space is actually intimidating not intimate. So...solution...create different ceiling heights or step down the floor level or place a hearth in the center (etc) to break up the space. Then you've created smaller spaces that do feel intimate but that open to the other living spaces beyond.
