"The Hand in the Mirror"
The hand in the mirror is about self consciousness. When you look at the graphite drawing, you can clearly see that the hand is drawing, and what it's drawing, unlike the artist being lost in thought and emotion during the process of creation. So often in life we do things and are unconscious about our actions. We may lie for instance and do it without a conscious awareness of our actions and the effect it has on others.
Loadshedding is a still life drawing done in graphite, size : 27.7cm x 42.2cm. If you live in South Africa, you'll understand the term loadshedding... It's basically electricity restrictions...but everything is back to normal now (thank God🙏)... Those were the candles and light I used whenever the lights would go out...
I basically just layered down vine charcoal or willow charcoal, whatever you wanna call it, since the charcoal is homemade by me. Then I began to lift highlights with my kneaded eraser. Faber Castell compresed charcoal sticks were used to add details and darken certain areas, adding depth to the drawing. The entire drawing was done from my imagination. And the hand prints... Yes, I did paste my hand on the drawing!
