Nelson Mandel became the first black president of South Africa in 1994. Despite being college educated and qualified to practice law, he joined the African National Congress to fight against apartheid, the system of racial separation that was abolished in 1994. In 1964, he and eight others were sentenced to life in prison for trying to overthrow the government by violence. He was released in 1990 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
