Based on a true story, this World War II novel is about a caring family and an amazing elephant. While Elizabeth's father is away at war, her mother is working at the Dresden Zoo, where she cares for a young elephant named Marlene. When the zoo director informs the workers, the dangerous animals will be killed to prevent them from harming people if Dresden is bombed, Elizabeth's mom moves Marlene to their garden.
