Coelocanth...living fossil...thought to be as extinct as the dinosaurs until one turned up in a fishing net in 1938. Never photographed alive until just a few years ago.

thought to be as extinct as the dinosaurs until one turned up in a fishing net in Never photographed alive until just a few years ago.

The coelacanth isn’t called a “living fossil” for nothing. The 2-meter-long, 90 kg fish was thought to have gone extinct 70 million years ago—until a fisherman caught one in 1938—and the animal looks a lot like its fossil ancestors dating back 300 million years. Now, the first analysis of the coelacanth’s genome reveals why the fish may have changed so little over the ages. It also may help explain how fish like it moved onto land long ago.

In 1928 Huberta left her waterhole in the St. Lucia Estuary in Zululand and set off on a 1600 km walk to the Eastern Cape, a journey which took her three years. In that time Huberta became a celebrity in South Africa and attracted crowds wherever she went. She arrived in East London in March 1931, but was shot by hunters a month later. Huberta's body was recovered and sent to a taxidermist in London and can now be seen in the Amathole Museum in King William's Town.
