Jade Dragon Cup, Central Asia , 1417-1449. Made during the Timurid Empire, which ruled Central Asia (the “stans”) from 1370-1500, founded by Tamerlane. This bowl is inscribed to his grandson, Ulugh Beg, a great astronomer (a crater on the moon is named for him.). The empire was Muslim; this was the time of the building of the great mosques of Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent and Herat. Ulugh Beg’s grandnephew was Babur, the first ruler of the Mughals in India. Japanese Bronze Mirror, made around 1100 CE. It was found in a sacred pond beneath the mountain-shrine of Haguro-san in the north of Japan. Japanese believed mirrors allowed humans to talk to the gods and thus this mirror, along with around 600 others, was thrown into the pond as an offering to a god.
