The smell of mulled wine, or glühwein as it is known here, always takes my thoughts on a trip down memory lane. My first encounter with the warm fragrant beverage was as a young teenage girl at my great-aunt’s house in Swellendam. It was a rainy winter’s weekend and we were sitting in front of the fireplace. I soaked up the grown-up conversation while I warmed my hands around the steaming red drink.
