Members of the SADF’s 61 Mech Batn take a rest during the fighting on the Lomba riv Angola 1987. Having just written a High School matric - barely 18 or 19 years old – have just shattered the Angolan/Cuban coalition’s mech offensive. Fighting in Ratel Infantry vehicles against Russian T 55 Tanks The “thousand yard stare” brought about from fatigue and extensive exposure to combat, ageing them well beyond their years. Remember 81199878BG Rifleman Willem Jacobus Du Randt from 3 SAI Oscar Company (Mortars) who was Reported Missing on 07 April 1985 after being attacked by a crocodile approximately 1km below the Epupa Falls where he and others in his section were swimming. He has no known grave and remains unaccounted for. He was 20. This picture shows the Memorial service held for him near the Epupa Falls by members of his Section. After the Memorial Service, the wreaths were cast into the water.
