MICRO-STORY: She has a syndrome, the doctor said, maybe she’ll return and maybe she won’t. My beautiful girl lies motionless on the bed. Her eyes do not open. She is not really here. He says the trauma was just too much, a result of our exodus, the shattering sea and the bodies bobbing in the waves, her mother one of them. I am a father alone in a place that is not my own, on the outside, with a daughter who has disappeared deep into her inside. belindadoveston.com

MICRO-STORY: Silk kimonos, bamboo shutters and rice paper sliders gliding silently: all these memories come flooding back as the iced liquor dribbles down the back of my throat. The fire water burns cold, the relieving antidote to the dripping heat of a hazy day. A shiver ripples down my spine, the tiny hairs standing to attention. Where do these flashes come from? From this life? Definitely not. From some distant life? Undoubtedly; a sweet and ceremonial past. I smile. Belindadoveston.com

MICRO-STORY: As soon as I felt myself dripping away, snaking coils of the genii’s breathe drawing me into its embrace, I could feel some small part of me, far away, crying out and pleading to hold on. It did no good. I had gone too far. I had breathed in the viper’s vapour and I was on my way to nothingness. And it felt good. As sure as this breath would exhale and inhale, sluggish and weak, I would be here again, the opioid’s tongue flicking its way through these lungs. Belindadoveston.com

'The Dividend' a young son, upset that his busy father ignores him, visits an opium den and becomes addicted to the drug. Hollywood’s sensationalized portrayal of women in opium dens fuelled the outrage of righteous citizens.

MICRO-STORY: The driveway grew a wart, a fungoid pushing its way through rock and root. It seemed innocent enough at first, and then it grew. I was there the moment it burst, the puffball spewing spores into the breeze, hopeful for infinite propagation. It was not the cloud of microbes that held my attention. It was the solitary unblinking eye that glared up at me from within its bowel that froze my core. I could remove the mothership, but I could never capture its progeny…

MICRO-STORY: He had waited a long time, patience tested to the very edge of his own outer limits. He was told that he would know, in time, what he was destined to do and become. As the rain poured down, clarity emerged as if the deep dust of forgetting had finally been washed away. The sword felt good in his hands, still heavy yet no longer tainted with restless confusion. His excitement bubbled up through the mud. At long last he would walk his own path, breathing freely…

MICRO-STORY: She could not move her toes. Not even a wiggle. On the first night, a deep cold descended. Freakish, the radio had said. In the pre-dawn shimmer she thawed, slowly. Her body ached as life returned. Yet her heart was on fire, the light of freedom creating its own glow from the embers deep inside. Never had such a small space felt so infinite and alive with possibility. She would not seek revenge for the past, only to take each mile as a marker on her road to somewhere else…
