This is the saddest word I know. It is the word for the last of its kind; the last living survivor of a species. When the endling dies, the species is extinct. The last known Tasmanian tiger died at Hobart Zoo in 1936. The last Kauaʻi ʻōʻō was a male, and its was recorded singing a mating call, to a female that would never come. It died in 1987.
