Following the Battle of Spion Kop on January 24th, British ambulancemen and Boer fighters walk over the battlefield under a flag of truce, looking for the wounded. Although the British took significant casualties, and retreated from the field, the loss was not a major setback for the British, who fell back in good order, unpursued by the Boers. The British soon resumed their advance, and reached Ladysmith about a month later. (McGregor Museum)
