Battle of Paadeberg, 18-27 February, 1900. The Boer army under Piet Cronjé was retreating from Magersfontein when they were caught by British cavalry near Paadeberg drift. The position was vulnerable to artillery, but Kitchner wasted lives on frontal assaults in what became known as "Bloody Sunday." Despite the British losses, Cronjé was forced to surrender, along with nearly 10% of the entire Boer army. The battle was the first major British victory, and a turning point in the war.
