A swimmer waves at passersby, above him on a footbridge, while a friend pulls themselves up and out of the canal in east Paris. If you swim in the Seine the police arrive, quickly. There are cameras everywhere. Fortunately, our French culture has taught us to fight with authority but we don’t want to have any trouble with police, so the best places are the canals on the outskirts of Paris where the police sometimes leave us alone to enjoy these beautiful waterways.
