Photographer Don Cox brought his cumbersome 5” x 7” "Box" Camera and Tripod to El Mirage and captured this shot of Fred Lobello from the San Diego Roadster Club at his first lakes meet of 1947 on September 21. Fred entered his slick Deuce in Class B Roadster. Power was by a ’32 B Ford-Four fitted with a Winfield head, Evans intake, Smith cam and Mallory ignition. Check out his cool exhaust header support system. The results have Fred running 96.35 mph in a field of 86 cars in the class. Top dog 32 Ford, Box Camera, Class B, September 21, Support System

To get you folks in the mood, Speedweek is on for August 11th to the 17th, so here's some stuff to get your motor running. The clean looking Williams Brothers entry from Oakview, California poses on the salt for us at Speedweek back in 1954. The car was powered by a little Dodge Red Ram and was one of five entries in Class B Roadster. They blew their engine in a trial run and spent all night replacing the DeSoto block. On Sunday morning the supercharged ride had its best run ever with a speed of 135.92 mph in 11.43 seconds. Entered in Class B Roadster, the boys were after the ’52 record of 146.365 mph set by Bill Likes. The car was fitted with a Dodge V8 displacing 250” that was fitted with a Herbert cam, Hilborn injection and fired by a Vertex mag. Driver Ron buzzed the alcohol-fed car through the lights at 5,600 rpm to qualify in first spot with a speed of 159.57 mph. He then did the two way thing Indy Cars

Mark Dees from Inglewood and Bob Joehnck from Santa Barbara teamed up with their Bantam bodied Class B Gas Roadster for an assault on the 1969 class record of 210.243 mph at Bonneville in 1970. With Mark driving the car they recorded a speed of 216.73 mph to grab a first in class. Bob had built the 468 Chevy V8 that powered the car and was extra happy after the car had two-wayed with an average of 220.681 mph for a new class record. Bob goes back to the early days and was behind the Goleta Drag Rausch, Inglewood, Bantam, Hellcat
