The Royal Bakery - It's Top Tip Tuesday! You may have seen the pocket watch that was on last weekend's teapot cake. This is a bit more info about the 'glass' surface of the watch. Sorry, it's a bit of a longy. Briefly, I cut a circle of white fondant about 1/4" thick, and stuck an edible image of a watch face on it. Then I wrapped the white circle with a rope of extruded yellow fondant to create the 'case'. The rope was about 1/4" in diameter. Then I added a little random shape at the 12 o'clock point to hide the join. On top of this I added the winder (just a squashed ball with indentations) and another little knob on top. All in yellow. To hide the join between the clock face and the thick rope 'case', I added another, much thinner rope of yellow fondant, and then another weeny ball for the catch thingy. Then I painted all the yellow bits gold. I thought I was done, but it just looked a bit like a fondant pocket watch. So I thought, what can I do to add glass to the watch face surface? I'm a big fan of shining things up with the 50/50 mix of corn syrup and vodka that I learned from Peggy Does Cake (see more here: http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/08/how-to-make-fondant-shiny/) but I was worried brushing it on would mess up the edible image. So I thinned some corn syrup just a little with vodka, and basically poured it on the watch face, tilting it so that it ran up to all the edges. The thin fondant rope around the edge stops it from running any further. The surface of the corn syrup was dry by the next day, but it took a full week for it to dry all the way through. As I wanted the watch to be upright on the cake, I had to leave it to dry this long, or the syrup would have just run away! I'm not sure what other applications this has, but I'm sure you will think of millions! In the UK, I'm told you can substitute glucose syrup for corn syrup, but you can also buy it from Amazon UK. | Facebook
