Rhino Ambassadors - Wilderness Adventure

Every so often, a very special adventure presents itself and we jumped at the chance to experience Dr Ian Player's vision (some 50 years back) of a conservation initiative to restore the balance between humans and Earth through a personal experience of wilderness. The Rhino Wilderness Trail is a spiritual experience of the African wilderness and comes at a time when the rhino is under threat of extinction. The trail is an adventurous leave-no-trace experience within the African wilderness.

The trail path and where we camp each evening is not 'set' as a typical itinerary - your guide will decide as the days progress, where to camp (from a number of pre-selected sites) and with the dynamics of the group in mind. This freedom to decide on our path and camp as each day unfolds is a wonderfully free feeling. We criss-crossed the Black iMfolozi River on many occasions, and here we are sitting to clean mud off of our feet from the river, before heading back out into dense bush.

On our first night in camp we were greeted by this spectacular male white rhino who splashed through the water from one bank to the other, whilst we quietly set up camp. Good to know... if you need to cross a croc infested river, walk through in a group and make lots of 'water noise' with your feet/legs, just like a wading rhino or elephant! The useful bits of info you pick up on trail!

An interesting discovery about rhinos, was that they 'hang out' with other wildlife 'look-outs' like the wildebeest and the zebra, as well as buffalo - rhinos have excellent hearing and sense of smell, but poor eye sight - we heard the alarm snorts of the wildebeest as we came nearer to the resting menagerie. For us, a treasure trove, to view so many species altogether.

The fruits of the 'Garden of Eden' are not so palatable to our modern tastes! Our guides were not only knowledgeable about the wildlife of the bush, but also the plant life - what one can eat, what is medicinal and also what plants and animals are significant in Zulu traditional culture.

At the beginning of trail we simply sat for a short time in silence, having crossed the threshold into wilderness, we were entering a different world and our guides wanted us to take cognisance of the fact that we were now in the realm of nature and we should act accordingly - leave no trace, walk in silent contemplation and observe. As we set off, we were greeted by three large white backed vultures whirling in circles just above the large tree evident just ahead of us.

Final morning duties before heading out again for a day of wandering along well worn animal pathways (and highways) to discover all manner of creatures in the African wilderness.

On foot in the wilderness, with the knowledge that around any corner you may encounter elephant or lion or any other wild inhabitant is thrilling. One walks in single file so that snakes up ahead will feel our vibrations and escape in either direction away from us. We are also less threatening to wildlife when we are in neat single file. Generally any action takes place up ahead, so one takes turns in being in at the front of the line.

Our lead guide Zondi explaining another fascinating aspect of the wildlife of Africa - like the African palm nut that only grows through veld fire, or in a pile of elephant poop! (obviously after being eaten, it comes out the 'other side').

Seeing rhino on trail was bitter sweet with the knowledge that their very existence is under threat in the wild from poachers. The Rhino Wilderness Trail, although not solely focused on rhino, does incorporate discussion regarding the current plight facing the rhino, what measures are being put in place to combat rhino poaching, and how every person can help - 'join in' and become a rhino ambassador.
