Deliciously Durban (& Surrounds)

South Africa sparkles with 'hidden gems'. Most international visitors sojourn in Cape Town & Kruger - don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Cape & Kruger is magnificent, but there are other places that I'd love to be able to sell more of - take a bow Durban - Gateway to the province of KwaZulu-Natal, with a rich Indian heritage, the warrior nation of the Zulu, incredible beaches, SCUBA diving, fishing, mountains called 'the barrier of spears', Big Five game reserves & wildlife!

Durban, 'secretly' beautiful from the ocean, as not many get to see the city's skyline from the ocean, even 'Durban'ites' themselves.

Umdloti Beach - great for long walks, fascinating discoveries in rock pools, fun in the ocean and general all round well being. There's nothing like the ocean to wash in a good vibe. Umdloti is north of Ballito - two small lively beachside towns north of the city of Durban - close enough as a day trip and closer still to Durban's King Shaka International Airport.

Durban's harbor is busy - one of the busiest on the African coastline. A working harbor, there is great material for both budding and professional photographers.

Durban's beachfront is where it 'all happens' - for the most part gentle and warm ocean waters shaded by the 'bluff' and flanked by a seaside promenade, which is always a hive of activity, loads of restaurants and watering holes (for the humans of course), the wonderful theme park of uShaka Marine World - water slides, a massive marine aquarium in the bowels of a shipwreck. Wilsons' Wharf in Durban Harbour has loads of restaurants, and is a great place to hop onto a cruise of the Durban Harbour (try a 'snack cruise' or a dinner cruise) - one is afforded excellent views of the Durban city skyline. Fishing charters also depart from Wilsons' Wharf.

Sand sculptures on Durban's beachfront are income generating for locals. Often the sand sculptures are topical in nature 'save our rhinos' for instance.

The MSC Opera Cruise Liner moored in Durban harbor on it's 2013/2014 cruise season - just back from a cruise to Mozambique and Madagascar. The Opera will be the only MSC cruise ship for the South African cruise season in 2014/2015. The MSC Sinfonia will not be returning next cruise season. The Opera is the more modern cruise vessel, with funky colours and great activities. Cruising is fun-filled holiday experiences.
