The residents had petitioned the government for many years to build a road into the valley, eventually in 1962 a road was completed. The valley is also known as "The Hell", when Piet Botha and animal inspector visited the valley in 1940 and have to enter by the difficult route known as the "ladder". He described the experience as "hell".
