The Voortrekker Monument is a monument in the city of Pretoria, South Africa. The massive granite structure, built to honour the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854, was designed by the architect Gerard Moerdijk who had the idea to design a "monument that would stand a thousand years to describe the history and the meaning of the Great Trek to its descendants". It can be seen from almost any location in the city, as it is seated on a hilltop.

The founding of the Voortrekkers coincided with the growth of Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa, then a member of the British Commonwealth. In some ways it was an Afrikaans-language alternative to the largely English-speaking Boy Scout movement, with its British heritage. The original concept of a youth movement amongst Afrikaners was formulated by Dr. C.F. Visser in 1913 in Bloemfontein. Blood River monument wagons

These wagons are part of the monument on the site of Blood River battle. The battle between the Boer Trekkers and the Zulu Impi took place on December 16th, 1838. The Boers numbering 470 along with some 200 servants were armed with single-shot rifles and small cannons. They were surrounded by the Zulu (estimated 10000 - 15000) who were using short spears to battle. The Trekkers made a covenant (vow) to God to keep the day holy should they be delivered from the battle. Their tactic was to…
