Le deserteur de Vian

There’s a lot going on in this photo from our archives. Notice the worker’s shoes? This wouldn’t pass muster in today’s world of occupational health and safety, but these espardenyes go all the way back to ancient times and are still used today as part of the traditional costume of the Ball Pagès courtship dances. Handmade from esparto grass and hemp, these shoes can take up to six days to create and were worn right across the island until the importation of mass-produced footwear in the 1950s.
