In the Stockholm Olympics had 7 swimming events for men and, for the first time, two events for women. The women swam a freestyle and a 4 x freestyle relay. This was the first Olympic games for Hall of Fame Swimmer "Duke" Kahanamoku; he won the freestyle.

In the Century BCE, the Great Bath at Mohenjo-Daro was built. It was constructed of finely fitted bricks laid on edge with gypsum plaster. A thick layer of natural tar was added along the bottom and sides of the pool as well to make it more water tight.
The "Great Bath" at the site of Mohenjo-Daro in modern-day Pakistan was most likely the first swimming pool dug during the millennium BC. This pool is 12 by 7 metres, is lined with bricks, and was covered with a tar-based sealant.
