Irma Stern (1894-1966) was een belangrijke Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar. Na de (boeren)oorlog keerde het gezin terug naar Duitsland. Deze verhuizing en latere reizen zou Irma's werk beïnvloeden. In 1913 studeerde ze kunst in Duitsland met Max Pechstein. Stern werd in verband gebracht met de Duitse expressionistische schilders uit deze periode. In 1920 keerde Stern met haar familie terug naar Kaapstad, waar ze eerst werd bespot, voordat zij een gevestigde kunstenaar werd van de jaren 40.
