This painting was inspired by something that Tom Swimm did. I am enchanted by boats in all shapes and forms and cannot help myself when I get an opportunity to draw or paint one. These temporarily discarded boats on an empty beach makes an emotional appeal that I enjoyed painting. Acrylic on paper. 148 x 208 mm

Who has not enjoyed flying a kite or even simply standing by and watching it soaring through the sky. And the sheer delightful concentration on a child's face when they are running the kite! Precious. In this picture I attempt to capture that shared enjoyment. I mixed some sand into the paint that I used on the shore and loved the effect that I got from it. Oil on masonite. 378 x 500 mm.

This painting was inspired by the talented Andre Gorbler. I, like so many others, am enchanted by the reflections of life in water. I always imagine it gives us some perspective on our reality - not always clear, but present wherever water is present. This painting attempts to capture that tranquil beauty of life's reflections in the water. Water colours and gauche on paper. 418 x 571 mm

Home shores. This painting is of the cliffs at Knysna in South Africa's Western Cape. The picture has been idealised and the colours made brighter and friendlier than you would find in reality, but this is merely an attempt to capture the spirit of lighthearted simplicity that seems to govern our vacations. I truly loved the outcome and was a little sad to part with it, but it is going to a good home ;-) Water colours and gauche on canvas board. 421 x 596 mm

Sailing home. This scene is a peaceful one where the boat is coming in to a safe and familiar shore. It is welcoming and tranquil and promises rest. It is a mixed media water colour on paper. 210 x 285 mm

Oil on board. I wish I could give credit to the artist who inspired this, but I do not know the name. I saw this on Facebook when someone shared the picture and became enchanted. I simply had to try this as it is not my usual style. I took some liberties with the picture, but absolutely love how it turned out.

This painting is in essence an understatement. It portrays a wish to be able to leave, to escape the narrow constraints of where the viewer is and disappear over the horizon where things are much lighter than where the viewer finds themselves. Oil on stretched canvas. 305 x 402 mm
