In 2005 Professor Mary Schweitzer of NC State University reported finding soft tissue, including blood vessels and cells, in a T-Rex bone dug out of sandstone from the fossil-rich, Hell Creek Formation in Montana. The vessels even appeared to be lined with specialized endothelial cells found in all blood vessels. Some skeptical scientists have suggested that since the T-Rex bones are suppose to be 68 million years old, and there is no way blood vessels could have survived that long, then this specimen must have been contaminated more recently with bacteria. Interestingly, Schweitzer found biochemical evidence for intact fragments of the protein collagen, which is the building block of connective tissue. This is important because collagen is a highly distinctive protein NOT made by bacteria.
